Weaving Yarn- Bookmarks

In this project, students created their own bookmarks using weaving techniques, with a focus on the cultural significance of weaving in various societies. The process involved constructing a loom using taped-together straws, leaving small gaps between them. Participants tightly wove a long string through the loom, maintaining a consistent pattern of over and under. After reaching the end of the straw loom, they threaded the individual strings through the straw holes and tied the ends together to prevent unraveling. Removing the weaving from the loom proved challenging, and some struggled with tight weaves and securing the ends. While optional, the addition of beads was considered to enhance the bookmarks. Despite finding the process detailed and somewhat overwhelming, the participant appreciated the unique introduction to weaving in the classroom.

Extension Activity: Selecting a yarn color symbolizing significance in your life, measuring approximately 12 arm lengths for weaving around our cups. Subsequently, then cut slits in the cup about halfway down, creating tabs for weaving. An essential starting point was marked by tying a knot around one of the tabs. Following this, students will finish the weaving process in an over-under pattern until the entire cup was covered in yarn. It is crucial to secure the yarn with another knot to prevent unraveling. The final step involved completing an exit ticket, where we elucidated the rationale behind our yarn color choice and described a practical application for the finished project.
