This activity we learned how to make clay tiles using the slab method. We also used additive and subtractive methods to make them. First we started kneading and rolling out the clay. Then we used a stencil piece of paper to trace a square and cut the clay with a wooden dowel. Next we used the extra clay to roll out again and make our symbols/logo. After scoring and slipping both pieces then we pressed them together and smoothed our creation out with a little water. You could also use one of the clay tools to scrape out designs.
Extension Activity: Read a book about monsters and have the students imagine their own monster and make a draft. Then sculpt and make their own monster out of clay. Lastly they will write a story about an adventure their monster has gone on. This is a good example of integrated teaching.
