Van Gogh Landscape

Starry Night Spin Off project consisted of first examining a range of Vincent Van Gough's works from throughout his career. We looked at Starry Night in particular and learned about the various textures, styles, and colors Van Gogh employed in his works. We were given the task of creating our own paper landscape and skyline using construction paper and tissue paper. Using different colors and shapes of tissue paper on a dark background we brushed on a glue shellack to make them stick. Then we drew out a landscape and cut it out. I decided to do a farm landscape and was trying to mimic northern lights for the sky. Added some line details with grey oil pastels, making it look windy and added some shadows to the fence, hay-bales, and windmill.

Extension Activity:

Have the children compose a creative narrative story using the scene they created as inspiration. Before they finished the project, I wouldn't share the writing assignment with the students. In this manner, they will be forced to consider their story more carefully. Then, when working on their art creation, students won't have to worry about coming up with ideas for their plot. When finished, this would make a fun project to display for parents along with the essay they wrote about it.
